Yarn count is the numerical expression which indicates or expressed the fineness or coarseness of yarn. According to Textile Institute, Count a number indicating the mass per unit length or the length per unit mass of yarn. Yarn count can be described into two systems:
1. Direct system or fixed weight.
2. Indirect system or fixed length.
Direct System: The yarn number or count is the mass of unit length of yarn. Higher the count coarser the yarn. This system is commonly used for man-made fiber, jute, silk etc.
Indirect System: In indirect yarn counting system the count or number is the length per unit mass of the yarn. Higher the count finer the yarn. This system is commonly used for cotton, worsted, linen etc.
